dead witch walking by kim harrison

Dead Witch Walking is another one of those Buffy-effect books out there. Not very unlike Jim Butcher in many regards but here we have another take: Instead of the hidden among us or living in a twilight world, Kim Harrison describes a very nice and different twist in history to lead us up to an almost normal today. Sometime after the 2nd world war bioenginered drugs brought on cancer and other deseases (remember those?) and in the end they kind of decimated humans so that the un-ordinary people like witches, warlocks, vampires, were-most-things and other weird things demanded a place beside humans. That lead to two major police forces, one regarding humans, one regarding extraordinary things.

This sounds maybe very pretentious, but it is describd in a very matter-of-fact way so you just take in strides and continue to read. Kim Harrison's main character, Rachel Morgan, is a witch who hunts extrordinary villians. She is good but her boss hates her so she decides after a really bad case that opens up some good venues at least to get out. With her she has her friend Ivy, a not yet undead vampire and a pixie. Morgan is dreaming for good runs that will lead to her wealth and glory and a much better life then she has at her currant job. When she moves in with above mentioned accomplishes, her first run is about the ultimate paycheck, her own life. With spells, magic, potions and a bit of help from her friends you are in for a bumpy ride.

This is not a igh fantasy world, but a more down to earth gothic take of someone who really seems to like vampires. Kim Harrison feels rather fresh in her writghting and even though some things are annoying you end up reading on and after awhile you are determined to find out what the heck happens to this reallt weird trio.

the good the bad and the undead

This second bookstarted really slow and much of the same and I really felt cheated here. But slowly the story about Rachel, her vamp friend and Jenks starts to evolve. Rachel is starting to think and not being such a pushover and the twisted humour that seems to belong to a happy teenage gothic person with too much affection for vampires turns into a darker phase. Despair and problems slowly arise and the demons comes back into play. Demons are such fun, they ar orderly english (brittish of course!) speaking gentlemen that appear orderly and nice but are hardly contained malvolence and pure energy of mayhem bundled up to go off any second. So much fun. Demons, ley lines and wich brews are however not enough when it coes to face the toughest vampire in the city.Runours have it he has a speciality concerning pizzas and doens't seem to have much love lost for Rachel. Strap yourselves in for another bumpy but good ride around the universe that fears tomatoes and garlic.

You should really like this book if you: Enjoy buffy like books that isn't all about vampires and also doesn't sport Sarah PMG. Likes books that are close to fantasy. Like the down to earth feeling of narrator style.

You won't like this book if you: Don't like mixing genres. Just aren't into either fantasy or neo-gothic. Don't enjoy books that dabbles into the more witch-like aspects of magic like dealing with amulettes and potion crafting instead of sporting a staff of fireballs and a lethal finger.

Good:

- Humour
- Easygoing
- Interesting new take of a same same but different genre
- i want to know factor that is high

Bad:

- The main character can sometimes be really annoying
- May be a bit too much sometimes
